Storytellers Executive Chef Nathan Schrieber Featured in New Book, The Sedona Table
The Sedona Table Book
I guess you could say that Executive Chef Nathan Schreiber of Cliff Castle Casino’s renowned Storytellers is enthusiastic about his restaurant.
And he has a reason to be.
It is fair to say that Storytellers is different from any other restaurant in the Sedona area.Elegant and quiet, with black linens and unusually shaped white china on copper tables in a room that evokes an ancient cave, the dark, intimate Storytellers bids to transport you a thousand years back in time.
Storytellers’ décor originates in the Yavapai Apache Nation’s Native American heritage. The name “Storytellers” is based on the oral tradition of native peoples—imparting knowledge and lessons of their distinct cultures through stories and song. These stories and songs were told after the first snow and before daylight grew short at the end of winter.
The rock walls inside take their cue from geologic aspects of the Red Rocks in Sedona, with each individual stratum of rock painstakingly reproduced. The result is a soothing, dark-lit dining environment that seems closer to nature than most.
The food, however, is here and now—a 21st century fusion of classic and innovative cuisine, with influences from both French and Southwestern cooking traditions.
“I enjoy twisting a recipe with complex tastes that appeal to every palate,” Schreiber says, additionally noting that “people tend to associate meals with the whole experience—and the atmosphere. It is always about the entire sensory experience of eating and drinking together and enjoying yourself.”
Chef Nate (as he is known locally) has a reputation for excellence. He has made several television appearances in Phoenix where he was featured cooking regional dishes.
It isn’t any surprise he also appears in The Sedona Table: Recipes from the Top Restaurants in Red Rock Country by Erika Ayn Finch, with photographs by Debbie Weinkauff, published by Pequot Press. The Sedona Table isa cookbook profiling twelve of the most prestigious Sedona area restaurants and chefs, accompanied by beautiful color photos. Each chef provides five of his or her favorite recipes.
The Sedona table will appeal to anyone who loves to cook, loves to eat, appreciates beautiful photography and scenery, or wants to know more about the Red Rock Country and Sedona. In April, copies will be available locally at The Well Red Coyote (3190 W Hwy 89A; 928-282-2284; Worm Book & Music Store (6645 Hwy 89A in VOC; 928-282-3471, or nationally at Barnes & Noble bookstores, and Amazon.com.
